Botox vs Dermal Fillers: What’s the Difference?
- By Lillian Cao, Nurse Injector
If you’ve been looking into cosmetic injectables, chances are you’ve come across terms like Botox, Xeomin and dermal fillers.
Whether you’re considering a treatment or simply curious, this article will help you understand the key differences between anti-wrinkle injections and fillers.
What are Anti-Wrinkle Injections (Botox/Xeomin)?
Anti-wrinkle injections, from popular brands as Botox, etc. are made from a toxin and used in small doses to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause expression lines—such as frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles.
These treatments soften the appearance of lines and help prevent them from deepening over time.
What is the process of a Botox treatment?
It all begins with a 45 min consultation with your qualified practitioner, where you’ll discuss your areas of concern, medical history and aesthetic expectations.
The clinician will ask you to make certain expressions to help identify those areas where treatment will be most effective.
The injections are quick and relatively painless—often described as a small pinch or prick and no anaesthetic is typically needed.
What areas are best for Botox?
Common areas treated with anti wrinkle injections include:
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
- Forehead wrinkles
- Redefine jawline – new Botox formulation
What is the recovery process?
While there’s minimal downtime, some patients may experience light swelling or bruising at the injection sites, but most can return to work or daily activities immediately.
Results begin to appear within a few days and typically last 3–4 months.
Note: Botox/Xeomin are not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding or for individuals with certain muscle or nerve conditions. Always disclose your medical history during your consultation.
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are designed to add or restore volume and structure to the skin.
As we age, we lose collagen, muscle, fat and bone density, which can lead to sagging or hollow areas. Fillers help smooth lines and lift the skin for a more refreshed and balanced look.
Most fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in your body that attracts and retains moisture. Once injected, it instantly adds volume, fills deep lines and enhances facial contours.
What areas are good for Dermal Fillers?
Common areas treated with dermal fillers include:
- Lips
- Cheeks
- Nasolabial folds
- Marionette lines
- Jawline and chin
Results are visible immediately and typically last between 12–24 months, depending on the product and treatment area.
Does it hurt?
The injection process is fast and most clients describe it as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful.
At Unique Aesthetic, we use premium fillers like Juvederm®, which contain Lidocaine, a local anaesthetic that reduces discomfort during and after treatment.
Who performs the treatments?
All cosmetic injectables at Unique Aesthetic are performed by experienced Registered Nurses with extensive training in cosmetic medicine and treatments.
