Dermal Fillers in NZ: What to Expect, Cost and Recovery
- By Lillian Cao, Nurse Injector
Looking to restore facial volume, smooth wrinkles or enhance your facial contours? Then dermal fillers may be an excellent option for you.
In this article, we’ll cover what dermal fillers are, how they work, what to expect from them and typical pricing in New Zealand.
What are Dermal Fillers and how do they work?
Dermal fillers are gel substances injected beneath the skin to add volume, soften wrinkles and enhance facial contours.
Most modern fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA)—a substance naturally found in the skin that attracts and retains moisture.
As we age, our skin gradually loses collagen, bone, fat and muscle, which can lead to lines, hollowness and sagging.
Dermal fillers help address these signs of ageing by replenishing skin’s lost volume.

Brands we use
At Unique Aesthetic, we use only premium dermal filler brands approved for use in New Zealand.
These were carefully selected for their safety, versatility and lasting results:
- Juvederm® – Known for its smooth finish and long-lasting results, ideal for lips, cheeks and folds.
- Belotero® – A soft, lightweight filler designed for fine lines and delicate areas, such as tear troughs.
- Teosyal® – Offers advanced formulations for precise contouring and volumisation.
All fillers we use contain Lidocaine, a local anaesthetic to avoid pain during treatment.
Benefits of Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers have become a popular option for both women and men looking for a quick, refreshed appearance without surgery.
Key benefits are:
- Add volume to lips or cheeks
- Soften wrinkles, folds and fine lines
- Restoring midface volume
- Define jawline
- Restore facial balance and symmetry
- Improve skin hydration and texture
Results are typically visible immediately, with full effects in 1–2 weeks.
Depending on the product and area treated, results can last from 12 to 24 months.

Who should avoid dermal fillers?
While HA dermal fillers are considered safe, treatment may not be suitable in certain circumstances.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active skin infections (e.g., cold sores, acne)
- History of severe allergies or anaphylaxis
- Certain autoimmune or bleeding disorders
Your clinician will go over your medical history during your consultation to make sure treatment is suitable for you.
What is the treatment process?
Every treatment at Unique Aesthetic begins with a personalised consultation, where we’ll assess your facial structure, discuss your goals and recommend the most suitable approach and product.
The injection process typically takes around 30–45 minutes, and most clients report only mild discomfort.
There is minimal downtime and you should be able to resume your normal activities the same day.

Aftercare and Recovery
After treatment, some patients experience mild swelling, redness or bruising at the injection sites, which usually resolves within a few days.
To achieve the best results, we recommend:
- Avoiding alcohol, exercise and heat exposure (sun, saunas) for 24–48 hours
- Avoid massaging or applying pressure to treated areas, unless advised
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated on the first night

The cost of dermal fillers depends on the area treated, the amount of product and its brand.
