Collagen-Stimulating Injectables - Are They Worth It?
- By Lillian Cao, Nurse Injector
While searching for effective, long-lasting rejuvenation, people are often torn between two popular options: Collagen Stimulators – also bio-stimulators – and Dermal Fillers.
In this article, we’ll explain what collagen-stimulating injections are, how they work, what to expect and typical pricing in New Zealand.
What are Collagen Stimulators and how do they work?
Collagen-stimulating injectables are treatments designed to encourage the skin’s natural collagen production.
Responsible for skin structure, collagen is a protein that decreases as we age, contributing to fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.
Bio-stimulators work by triggering the skin’s natural healing response. They don’t just fill areas directly as traditional fillers do — instead, they stimulate the growth of new collagen fibres by mimicking a minor injury.
This process encourages the skin to produce new collagen, elastin and other proteins, gradually improving its structure and appearance.
Unlike dermal fillers, collagen-stimulating injectables work progressively. In addition, the effects tend to last longer, as the body takes longer to degrade them, with the added benefit of enhancing the skin’s own collagen-building process.

Types of Collagen-Stimulating injectables
- Poly-L-lactic Acid (PLLA) – Stimulates deep collagen production; best for gradual, natural volume restoration. Example: Sculptra®.
- Poly-D,L-lactic Acid (PDLLA) – Similar to PLLA but with a different molecular structure, offering slightly varied longevity and results.
- Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) – Provides an immediate volumising effect while also stimulating collagen. Example: Radiesse®.
- Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) – Semi-permanent option that offers long-lasting structural support alongside collagen stimulation.
Brands we use
At Unique Aesthetic, we use only premium collagen-stimulating products, approved for use in New Zealand.
These were carefully selected for their safety, versatility and lasting results:
- Profhilo® – An ultra-pure hyaluronic acid treatment that deeply hydrates and remodels skin for improved elasticity and firmness.
- Sunekos® – A unique combination of amino acids and hyaluronic acid designed to stimulate collagen and elastin production, restoring skin’s natural glow.
- Radiesse® – Provides both immediate lift and ongoing collagen stimulation.
- Sculptra® – Gradually restores volume by encouraging long-term collagen growth.
Some products contain Lidocaine, a local anaesthetic that helps ensure a more comfortable experience.
Differences with Dermal Fillers
Dermal Fillers are injectable substances designed to add volume, enhance contours and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are the most commonly used – HA is a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps maintain hydration and fullness.
These fillers deliver immediate, visible results as they can offer instant plumping and smoothing effects. They often target fine lines, wrinkles, lips and areas that require volume restoration.
Fillers offer more visible and predictable outcomes in a single session, while collagen-stimulating options provide gradual, longer-lasting rejuvenation.
One key difference is reversibility. HA fillers can be dissolved if needed, while collagen-stimulating fillers must be degraded naturally by the body. For this reason, many people choose HA fillers for their first treatment, and then consider collagen-stimulators once they know they are happy with the results.
Benefits of Collagen Stimulators
Bio-stimulators offer several versatile applications:
- Add volume to cheeks, temples and other areas
- Large volume deficits on the face
- Jawline contouring
- Rejuvenate hands or neck
- Treatment of atrophic acne scars
Some results are immediately visible from the volume of the injection fluid. The increased collagen production typically appears within 4–6 weeks, with full effects developing over 3-6 months.
Depending on the product and area treated, results can last for several years.

Who should avoid collagen stimulators?
While bio-stimulators are generally considered safe, treatment may not be suitable in certain circumstances.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active skin infections (e.g., cold sores, acne)
- History of severe allergies or anaphylaxis
- Certain autoimmune or bleeding disorders
- Prone to excessive scarring or keloid formation
A thorough consultation with a qualified practitioner is essential to make sure treatment is suitable and to minimise potential risks.
What is the treatment process?
Every treatment at Unique Aesthetic begins with a personalised consultation, where we’ll assess your facial structure, discuss your goals and medical history, and recommend the most suitable approach and product.
The injection process typically takes around 30–45 minutes, and most clients report only mild discomfort.
There is minimal downtime and you should be able to resume your normal activities the same day.

Aftercare and Recovery
After treatment, some patients experience mild swelling, redness or bruising at the injection sites, which usually resolve within a few days. In rare instances, lumps or nodules may develop, which can be addressed by your practitioner.
These post-treatment guidelines need to be followed:
- Apply cool compress to the treated area
- Avoiding alcohol, exercise and heat exposure (sun, saunas) for 24–48 hours
- Avoid massaging or applying pressure to treated areas, unless advised
- Sleep on your back, with your head slightly elevated
- Use a gentle skincare routine
One or more follow-up appointments may be necessary to assess your progress and ensure the best outcome.
